2.1.4 Extra Hitter:
The Extra Hitter may be used in 13U, 15U, 16U Girls.
An Extra-Hitter (EH) may be placed on the lineup card (a 10th hitter which can be placed anywhere in the batting order) to get more athletes at-bats throughout the game. This rule is optional for both teams prior to each game and does not have to be used by both teams during a game. The EH must be marked on the lineup card at the start of the game and must be used for the entire game.
The EH may be interchanged with any other position during the game and can be changed multiple times. For example, the SS could become the EH and the EH become the SS.
If a player is injured, and the team has no eligible substitutes available, the Re-entry Rule (currently 2.1.8 b) would apply and the team would continue to bat ten players. If the team had no other players available for selection OR in the event of an ejection, the game would proceed with 9 players, without forfeit. A player removed due to injury or ejection in this circumstance is not permitted to return to the game. Any further loss of players would result in a forfeit.
EXAMPLE
Team A has thirteen players at their game while Team B has ten players. Both teams choose to use the EH for this game.
What this means: Both teams will have ten active players involved in the game and must place nine players
each into the field defensively each inning. It doesn’t matter which nine, you can
alternate without it being an actual substitution.
Can the EH pitch? The pitching rules remain unchanged. If that player has not pitched in that game and
is eligible based on previous days rest, they can pitch. Once removed from pitching
can play any other position other than catcher for the remainder of that day.
EH substitution: A bench player (one of the three extras on Team A) can enter the game as the EH just
like a normal substitution. The starting EH may re-enter the game in that same spot just
like any other re-entry.
Ejection: Re-entry is not permitted for an ejected player unless the starting player they entered the game
for is eligible as a re-entry. If the team does not have a player not yet entered into the game, that
team would then be permitted to drop down to nine players. Less than nine players is a forfeit.
Injury: The only difference with an injured player vs an ejected player is that an injury substitution is
permitted. If the team is using the EH, that tenth player can just come into the field defensively
without reference to the injury. If the injured player cannot bat, then that team can substitute a
not yet active player into their spot or drop down to nine batters. If the team does not have a fresh
player, then they must and can play with nine. Less than nine players is a forfeit.
